Economic Outlook and Issues for 2019
About the Presentation: The presentation will look at the year 2017 in review and then make projections for progress in 2018. Topics covered will include economic growth, job creation, wages, inflation, interest rates, the government sector, and the Federal Reserve. Special attention will be given to the Trump Administration’s economic policies, including tax changes, infrastructure, and the renegotiation of trade agreements. The likelihood of a recession in 2018 or 2019 will also be addressed.
The presentation will conclude with a look at the North Carolina economy. How has the state’s growth compared to the nation’s, and what are the key economic issues facing the state.
About the Speaker: Dr. Michael L. Walden is a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at North Carolina State University, and a member of the Graduate Economics faculty with The Poole College of Management. His Ph.D. degree is from Cornell University and he has been at N.C. State since 1978. He has also been a Visiting Professor at Duke University.
Walden has published twelve books and over 300 articles and reports, including his newest book, North Carolina beyond the Connected Age: The Tar Heel State in 2050.
Walden can be frequently seen, heard, and read in the media. He has daily radio programs aired on stations around North Carolina. His biweekly column, You Decide, is carried by over 40 newspapers in the state. He has made over 2800 personal presentations.
Walden has won numerous academic and public awards, including two Champion-Tuck Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting, the UNC Board of Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and the Holladay Medal for Excellence from North Carolina State University.

Retirement Income Backstop W/ Bruce McGuirk
About the Presentation: This presentation is intended to provide participants with a planning solution to client’s fear of outliving their income. It reviews retirement income planning and how the way a client’s accumulation (working) years projections cannot be the same as the client’s distribution (income) years projections. It reviews the various income risks a client faces during their distribution years, and uses a case study to illustrate how the solution works. The seminar is concluded with a question and answer session.
About the Speaker: Prior to returning to John Hancock (Manulife) in 1994 as the Greensboro Regional Director, Bruce owned and operated a brokerage general agency that specialized in assisting life insurance professionals and stockbrokers in life insurance case design and presentation for estate planning and business situations. Before forming his own BGA, Bruce spent 12 years as a leading Brokerage Manager with Manulife Financial in San Francisco. In this capacity, he served as the advanced sales specialist and underwriting advocate for life insurance professionals, stockbrokers and BGAs.
