Curious to know more about Financial Planning Day?

1)  What is St. Louis Financial Planning Day?

St. Louis Financial Planning Day is a free event designed to give St. Louis residents an opportunity to speak one-on-one with professional financial planners and address their financial questions at no cost.

Highly qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professionals will volunteer their time and expertise to offer personalized one-on-one advice and to present classroom-style educational workshops addressing key personal finance topics.

The advice and information provided by financial planners is free, and there will be no sale of products or services and no strings attached.

2)  Who is organizing the event?

The event is organized by City of St. Louis and the FPA of Greater St Louis, in partnership with four national non-profit organizations – Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Financial Planning Association, Foundation for Financial Planning, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

St Louis Financial Planning Day is part of the national Financial Planning Days initiative, a ground-breaking program involving city governments and thousands of financial planners nationwide, in an effort to provide free financial education and programming to people across the country.

3)  What type of advice can the public expect to receive?

It depends on each person’s questions and needs – people can ask about debt management or basic budgeting concepts, tax planning, mortgage, paying for college, retirement planning, estate planning or insurance, among many other things. Participating financial planners are highly qualified to discuss a variety of personal finance topics and issues.

4)  Can you tell me a bit about the workshops?

The event will also feature a series of free classroom-style educational workshops presented by top financial planners addressing a variety of popular financial topics.

5) Do people need to register to attend St Louis Financial Planning Day?

While walk-ins to the Financial Planning Day are welcome, admission will be granted first to those who have pre-registered online. We encourage people to register early.  Online registration is available at www.financialplanningdays.org as the date of the annual event grows closer.

6)  It’s billed as a free event, but isn’t there a catch?

The financial information provided by financial planners is free, and there is no selling of products or services and no unsolicited follow-up, in other words – no strings attached.  City of St Louis hopes that the Financial Planning Day will help people who have pressing financial questions that need answers, particularly those in our community affected by the recent economic crisis.

7)  Who is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professional?

CFP® certification is renowned for its rigor – it is granted to financial planners who hold a Bachelor’s degree, complete initial and ongoing financial education, pass a comprehensive multi-hour examination, attain requisite professional experience in financial planning, and agree to provide financial planning services as a fiduciary – acting in the best interests of their clients. CFP Board’s disciplinary enforcement of its ethical standards further distinguishes CFP® certification from other industry designations.

CFP Board currently oversees more than 70,000 CFP® professionals in the U.S. who advise individuals and families on a broad range of personal finance topics, including retirement, estate planning, taxes, investments, budgeting and insurance, among many others.

8) Who are members of the Financial Planning Association?

Financial Planning Association members are those who commit to the highest standards of professional competence, ethical conduct and clear, complete disclosure to those they serve. They deliver advice using an objective, client-centered, ethical process. FPA membership consists of financial planners and all those who support the financial planning process.
